Statement from Principal McManus regarding shooting at STEM H.R.

We at Stevens Elementary are devastated by the school violence at STEM Highlands Ranch yesterday. It is so hard to cope with what seems like senseless injury and death of young people.
Though we are all feeling sad, scared, angry, and so many other things, we must keep in mind that this does not define our schools or community. We cannot give in to fear or hopelessness. Though our emotions are in turmoil, statistically we know our schools are one of the safest places our children can be. Stevens is a caring place to learn. One of the best ways to heal and cope is returning to our normal lives while recognizing our feelings and supporting each other.
Our hearts go out to the families hurt by this tragedy, and deep condolences to the family and friends of the student that was lost. I feel a respectful response is love and resilience – and that means continuing the good work at our school for our wonderful students.
At Jeffco Public Schools we:
• Have Department of School Safety staff members assigned to every school area to respond to calls and patrol the area.
• Train all our staff on emergency response.

• Use standard response protocol to coordinate efforts between students, families, school staff, and law enforcement (lockouts, lockdowns, etc.)

• Hold drills at school every year so students understand how to respond in an emergency.

• Work closely with local law enforcement, including an assigned School Resource Officer (SRO), to prepare for and respond to threats, emergencies, and more.

• Educate our students and families on
Safe2Tell.org to offer another way to report concerns.
