Maximizing Potential Through Personalized Learning - December  2018

Hello GT families!

What’s happening in our labs?

Lit Lab

Ms. Slifka went to Australia for Thanksgiving break and brought back so many fun new things to share.  Students were guided on a virtual reality experience flying over Sydney, visiting the 12 Apostles, and diving along the Great Barrier Reef, just like Ms. Slifka did. We also got to look at the difference between the currencies in the two countries.

This month we have also been working on our Holidays Around the World.  Together we learned about several countries, what holiday they celebrate, and their traditions.  Students then completed an independent research project on a country of choice.  Our culminating project ended with a fun celebration where everyone got to show off all of their hard work and bring in traditional food to share.

STEAM Time Out!

“Is that true with any number?” The incredulous words of a first grader who discovered that changing the value of any three digit number by increasing or decreasing the  amount of ones, tens and hundreds, then subtracting the new number from the original, will leave the same difference.

“Are we really going to the moon?”, inquired a second grade student as she and others were building a rocket ship out of Legos that will transport the necessary supplies they will need to survive and build a base on the moon.

The project is FIRST Lego Mission Moon. 2nd and 3rd Graders are designing and building a moon base out Lego bricks, and devising solutions to live on the moon.

“Wow! That’s a reeeeaaaally big number.” A fifth grade student’s reaction when he totaled the cost to build his space themed resort located on Pluto.

4th and 5th Grade students have been busy using multi-digit multiplication, long division, area, perimeter, volume and scale (no calculators) to calculate costs and to design and build a scale model of their resort. Students are using technology resources such as Sketchbook and TinkerCad, 3-D drafting software, to bring their resorts to life.

Time with GT Social Emotional Learning Counselor (SELC)

We have been working on goal setting, problem solving and communication skills. 1st-3rd graders got to dissect owl pellets as a reward for showing more cooperative behavior in the Lit Lab.

Directions to download the Jeffco App is  here  and select GT as one of your schools.

IMPORTANT INFO!

All returning GT Center families will need to log into new EnrollJeffco system between January 22 - February 8  to indicate their intent to return to the Center or they will lose their spot! Please go to EnrollJeffco for more information.  This process will replace the former paper/pencil Intent to Return forms.  GT Center families need to do this because Jeffco will be rolling out a new Choice enrollment process this year, which will impact Center students.  This new online system will be more convenient for families applying to multiple programs (IB, STEM, specific schools, etc.), will provide greater transparency and will help schools better plan staffing/funding.  A ‘SchoolFinder’ tool will help families compare various programs and schools which will be available on Dec. 19th or after.
